Heidi DeStefano

Heidi DeStefano

Heidi DeStefano spent some of her childhood on a ranch like Chickie’s in the Missouri Breaks of Montana. She writes stories for children that celebrate the rural northwestern United States. Experienced as a reading interventionist, a classroom teacher, and a college children’s literature instructor, Heidi believes every child should have the opportunity to see their culture authentically represented in books.

Now residing with her husband and cat near the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming, she goes hiking and fishing as often as she can. Heidi has published two research articles in the Journal of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and she has created an early reader series featuring a ranching family in Montana (www.meettheapplemans.com) and a short series about the birds living at her local pond.

Winner of the 2022 Children’s Literature Wyoming Writers Award and a frequent winner of Wyoming Writers flash fiction prompts, she enjoys incorporating her love of the land into the stories she tells. Someday, Heidi hopes to acquire some chicken friends of her own.
